Introducing France-based Chilean artist Vesten Vanis latest “Me Encuentras” EP, a sonic journey inspired by the vibrant electro and EBM scene of Valparaíso, infused with the sultry allure of whispered Spanish vocals. This release is an exploration of heightened BPMs, delving into glitchy elements and fast-paced retriggering bass lines that have been honed over years of experimentation and sonic exploration.
What was the source of the inspiration for creating your Ep?
The mechanical rhythms of the electro and EBM scene in my hometown Valparaíso, mixed with whispered and sensual vocals in Spanish as we can hear in South American projects such as Dilunar, Alejandro Paz, Happy707 and Los Mekanikos.
It brought me to envision an EP that could have those elements but at a higher BPM than usual. Also that nurtures from the glitchy elements that I have been working on for years: fastly retriggering bass lines and crushing the bit depth in my synths. As for the lyrics, I wanted to describe feelings of entering a trance state on the dancefloor (“Espectro”), of mirroring dance moves with others (“Entre las luces y el humo”) and of searching for someone who gets constantly lost in the crowd and who is also looking for you (“Me encuentras”), and I wanted to tell them in a way that the people who dance to it later can use these words to inhibit the character that speaks, getting into the stories within the party that it suggests.
Could you tell us more about your origin?
Hailing from a metalhead background, my musical journey commenced with the inception of Mindpath, a death metal project, years before my foray into electronic music. Flying solo, I meticulously recorded guitars, bass, and vocals, seamlessly blending in electronic drums. As time progressed, my captivation with drum production evolved into an all-consuming passion, propelling me towards crafting wholly electronic compositions. Initially immersing myself in the realm of minimal deep tech, my sonic exploration gradually gravitated towards embracing the pulsating beats of techno and electrifying sounds of electro with unwavering enthusiasm.
You made a video accompanied by the track “Me encuentras”? Could you tell us the story behind it?
Last year we started (with Noélie Desbois and Felipe Díaz Galarce) making a documentary about getting into a state of trance for the first time during a techno party in Valparaíso. It is a mix of testimonies in Spanish and French, dance choreography, and footage from our town’s nightlife. It is now in post-production, and there was a scene that we barely used in the documentary. A choreography, that I later edited into the “Me encuentras” music video.
