Berlin based modular synthesist and DJ JakoJako, aka Sibel Koçer, has shared the first track from her new four-track Segmente EP for NovaMute, set for release on 26 July 2024. We had a pleasure to ask her few questions regarding her new four track release.
LISTEN TRACK HERE:
Her journey began with an insatiable curiosity for sound, leading her from DIY synths to performing live sets in Berlin. After leaving her nursing career in 2017, she joined SchneidersLaden, immersing herself in the music community. Her emotive, experimental tracks have gained her recognition, leading to high-profile performances and collaborations. As a resident at Berghain and with new music and DJ performances lined up for 2023, JakoJako’s future in the electronic music scene is boundless.
Hey Sibel, How’s your day going on ? Festival season is in full swing! How are you managing to stay in the spirit? What does your routine look like these days?
Thank you, I’m doing well, enjoying the festival season, and staying busy! Balancing different type of shows like Live Sets, DJ sets and collaboration has been both a challenge and a joy. I’ve been immersing myself in the festival atmosphere, discovering new music, and listening to performances by other artists, which is always inspiring and my favorite part when touring. Besides, I’ve been dedicating time to finish my new album, staying healthy, and spending quality moments with friends and family. That’s easier sad than done for me. But I’m getting better with the years 🙂
Festival season is work season for me and is holiday season for others, but that’s ok. What’s difficult for me is to keep track of tasks like all the administration work, emails, and the „boring“ stuff. But generally speaking of summer 2024, is that it’s a busy but fulfilling time, and I’m grateful for the chance to enjoy it all.
Could you introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a bit about JakoJako?
I’m a producer and live act and also DJ. I mainly do music on Hardware Synthesizers and spend the money I earn mostly on Eurorack modules. I do like to make Electronica and Ambient but have a soft spot for harder electronic music. My love for techno brought me to a residency at the best club in the world called Berghain. I recently work a lot with the label Mute and Novamute. Before people knew me through either Schneidersladen or the Music Label Leisure System.

We are amazed by your sound and the consistency of your work, especially considering your incredible transformation from being a nurse to becoming a musician. Looks like it was your dream always, however how come that sudden change? What is your secret to your current success?
Thanks for the kind words. I had an early love for electronic music. But the urge to understand how it works came later. Over the years my curiosity grew so much that I just loved to stay awake all night to explore and discover what makes electronic music work. I was deadly tired at work but managed it somehow. I guess you can only do this when you’re young! I always had 2 jobs in order to build up a studio. I’m a hyperactive personality anyway. And if I like something I can be quite obsessive. On the other hand if I try something and I don’t like it, I really can’t force myself to learn it. I always wanted to learn sewing and designing my own trousers, but I’m just not passionate enough for it. Even though my mum is a tailor and I have all the resources. It was just not my thing.
We are excited to premiere “Flux” from your new four-track Segmente EP for NovaMute. Could you tell us about your collaboration with the label? How did it come about? What inspired the sound of your latest project? Did you approach the creative process differently this time?
I know Daniel Miller through the Eurorack community. He’s a great chap! After the first New Order remix on Mute he asked me if I want to release a solo EP. It was such a great opportunity and an immense amount of trust that I got from him and the label.
For the EP I got inspired by my live Sets. „Flux“ was a Live Track and has a broken rhythm, which was way more dominant in the live set situation. I tried to soothe it out and make it a little more „danceable“. Usually I look for those kind of tracks to spice up tool based techno sets. Same with the tracks on the B-Side. These are tracks with a pad in the background, dreamy sounding. These are tracks I need in dj sets to add some emotional moments. Perfect for closings or when the sound is getting too hard.
What does the future look like for you in the upcoming months?
The upcoming months are busy. A lot of new cities I’ve never been to and I’m sure a lot of new beautiful people and artists to discover. Usually in winter, I take some time off in order to learn something new. After working with the „Detect Ensemble“ I’m definitely hyped to take in some more music Theory. Apart from that there are a couple of new releases in the pipeline 😉
