Chleb by Mala Herba

The video and single Chleb ( translated : Bread) announce Mala Herba’s sophomore album Wounded Healer, out via White Forest Inc. on 21.09.2024.

Mala Herba - Chleb

Mala Herba is a solo project of producer, sound artist, and queer activist Zosia Holubowska. Their practice is deeply rooted in Slavic archaic music. Their artistic approach can be described as queering archives through reimagining traditional melodies and magical tropes. Their productions are multi-layered narratives and function as healing rituals.

The video is an outcome of 3 years of collaboration between Mala Herba, a butoh dancer and dark performer Agata Sokół, and a new media artist Joanna Zabielska.

Mala Herba - Chleb
Mala Herba first started connecting the music and Sokół performance at the Fala Occult Festival in 2021. Organized around the figure of a white goat, the collaboration took on a form of an improvised ritual dedicated to raw power and resilience of femmes and queers. In Mala Herba’s words: ‘Times and times again I enjoy experiencing art as a collective endeavor and spiritual practice as a political force.’

In 2022, Joanna Zabielska, a new-media artist, joined the project. The group recorded the video and 3d material at the stone sculpture open-air museum Symposion Lindabrun. Set in a theater, a kind of future ruins, Sokół and Mala Herba’s bodies create various hybrid altars. The 3d world was created by Zabielska based on scans of movements, tableaus, and elements of the landscape. The video was already shown at the Butohpolis Festival in Warsaw and at BUoY Tokyo Gallery.
