The Ways of Seeing is a fashion photoshoot by Simian Kauris an evocative exploration of our world’s unseen and misunderstood aspects, captured through the lens of avant-garde fashion. This creative endeavor delves into the profound concept that reality is multifaceted, and our perceptions are often limited by conventional viewpoints.
It all started with me finding the amazing @storrveldi. The internet is a very special place to find people from around the globe, and since the start of the year, I have been connecting more globally and extending myself to travel around the world outside the UK whenever there is the chance.
We had a meeting and I instantly knew she also had ADHD (insert Spiderman meme pointing at each other). We talked about everything in between life and creativity and the fashion industry is a mess for upcoming designers. I think when it comes to working with someone you also need to be able to vibe together, I can surely just make it about work, but in that case, I will not be really excited or even interested in working with you in the future, I value the experience, the talks, our long drives, the little coffees, and chit-chat are really needed sometimes to delve inside the mind of a designer.
At first, we were going to do this shoot in Paris, but I’m happy we did not do it and instead went to Iceland. Stjorn is from Canada, and she was going to Paris for a little visit, but she had a stop in Iceland, so we just went for it. Stjorn also got a car for the time we were in Iceland as you need one when you are there to go pretty much everywhere.
Whenever I go to NYC, I have 2 hours layover in Iceland, so I am used to the airport and the crispy air, but I never thought I would go beyond that. This was a fever dream that came true. We were there for 4 days which we spent planning, shooting, and having fun. There were multiple landscapes which we decided from in order to shoot this project, but only two of them felt closer to us and gave us the sense of wonder and escapism which I often seek especially when you live in a city like London.
We wanted to give the viewer a chance to see another
perspective reality offers. Sometimes what you see daily is not enough to fulfil you internally, I think we often seek to see and feel but we don’t have all the same opportunities so I decided to simply make people savour the moments we live in the hope that they can feel and sense through the photos I captured.
I was also really inspired by the book Ways of Seeing, which talks about our senses, sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Of course, Thierry Mugler’s photography also inspired me a lot for this photoshoot. He used to do photography as well, and one of my dreams is to travel around the world and take photos of fantastic-looking locations as they melt in fashion.
