Fast-growing it-girl brand Lou de Bètoly, founded by the designer of the same name, prepares to present its latest collection at Berlin Fashion Week this February.
The Berlin-based French brand specializes in upcycled, handmade garments of exclusively vintage and deadstock textiles. Sustainability is at the core of the brand but– defiantly– so is decadence. The brand makes use of electronics, glasses, cufflinks– anything that can be reconstructed into glittering, intricate, and edgy constructions.
The Berlin Contemporary-winning brand has been seen on Dua Lipa, Beyonce, and Rosalía. Despite these recent mainstream successes, it is committed to keeping far from the excess of the twentieth century trend cycle.
“I wanted to find a way out of the dead end of commerciality repeating itself over and over again and resulting in a lot of waste.”
Lou de Bètoly
Lou de Bètoly is conscious of how the garments it chooses to create enter and live in the world.
While some of their pieces may not quite be practical– the best fashion never is– they are playing with new ways of creating fashion within their parameters of sustainability.
“Jewelry thongs” are one of the label’s pieces that incorporate both extravagance and sustainability. The delicately beaded undergarments are detachable works of art. Jewelry clasps allow the wearer to remove the fabric for efficient cleaning or to swap another color or string of beads.
Brands like Lou de Bètoly are doing their part to inspire the future of fashion. That future doesn’t have to sacrifice extravagance and couture in the name of sustainability. Both can be possible at once, with enough creativity and dedication.
The upcoming collection is expected to play with a mix of texture, unpredictable material, and embellishments. It will no doubt leave a big impact at Berlin Fashion Week this weekend.
