‘Always in Flux’ – a new multi-track EP by prominent techno artist, Lee Ann Roberts, to be released in July

In Lee-Ann Roberts’ hands, even the hardest techno can have subtlety and soul. The Amsterdam-based, South African-born artist has become a prominent force in the current global techno scene. This is thanks to her fierce determination combined with a vibrant creative touch. She leads with her own label NowNow – a self-reliant platform which nods to the South African colloquialism meaning ‘soon’. It’s a call to surrender to the moment and simply follow where the music takes you.

As her career has sharply risen, its a mantra she has always stood by. After her debut on Spanish label Suara with her tune ‘Miyamoto’, she instantly scored no.2 on Beatport’s Hard Techno chart. Alongside building NowNow, she’s simultaneously been working on her own productions and dropping remixes from verified legends like D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Jay Clarke and Dense & Pika.

Roberts’ first break came via her own show on Cape Town’s Mutha FM before traveling to LA and finding a
home at the legendary Hollywood nightclub AVALON. Since then, she has skyrocketed onto the dance music scene at a global scale. From Secret Solstice in Iceland to Caprices Festival, BPM alongside Jeff Mills, DGTL and Verknipt in Amsterdam and many more events across the globe. Roberts is continually progressing and road-testing her tracks in the pressure-cooker situations she finds herself in every weekend.

The vitality in Roberts’ sound undoubtedly comes from her broad outlook on music. Her inspiration came just as much from the revolutionary misfits of rock as the visionary pioneers of electronic music. Her attraction to unusual and distinctive qualities in the music she makes and plays all add up to one of the most exciting forces in contemporary techno – a commanding presence that demands your full attention.

‘Always in Flux‘ is the title track, kickstarting the EP with melancholic, spiraling ambient synth patterns. Then, incomes a weaponized kick drum twisting the energy and upping the tempo, flaunting Robert’s signature sound. ‘Old School’ follows on with chopped-up vocal samples, high-energy basslines, and relentless drum sequences – it’s sure to keep a dance floor moving. She then brings back two singles from the ‘Come With Me EP’ released last November. ‘Come With Me’ infuses the EP with its unwavering raw and hypnotic energy, where a feminine vocal adds a touch of elegance to the industrial, driving mood. Concluding the EP, ‘1961’ hones in on a distorted yet futuristic trance bassline, trippy synths, and steadfast energy.

”Each track in my EP is a chapter of my story, a canvas where emotions and experiences intertwine to create a symphony of authenticity. Through the highs and lows, the melodies resonate with resilience, reminding listeners that creativity knows no bounds.

I created the track Always in Flux as an emotional introduction to unify the EP. This track is a prime example of my dedication to continual growth and experimentation, reflecting my passion for evolving my sound and exploring new musical territories.

Old School is something I created a few years ago and has been sitting on the shelf, waiting for the right moment. With this track, I let my imagination run wild, resulting in a piece that is both fun and eccentric. Its playful and unconventional nature is a true reflection of my personality and artistic style, making it a unique addition to my body of work.

Come With Me and 1961 were deeply personal projects, created as a tribute to my mother after she passed away. Writing these pieces was a cathartic experience during an incredibly challenging period in my life, allowing me to express my grief and honor her memory through my music.’’
