First detected in the 1950s, Quasars remained a mystery for years with the massive amount of energy seeming to come from a very small area of space. Over time, astrophysicists theorised and proved that these celestial objects are black holes forming the centres of galaxies.
For the latest Micron Audio release, 6SISS creates a sonic exploration of the many aspects of these gigantic cosmological bodies resulting in a collection of tracks that reflect their density, power, and luminosity.
Each of the four tracks, QUASAR I-IV, represents a different phase of interaction with a quasar’s energy, from initial observation to a final, euphoric absorption into the quasar’s core: fizzing and enigmatic synths suggest the radio waves that travelled for thousands of years before being detected, while other bassier sounds bring to mind the vast gravitational pull of galactic centres, slowly attracting stars and planets alike towards them.
As with all Micron Audio releases, QUASAR reveals a deep appreciation of scientific discovery and knowledge. Whilst avoiding retro-futuristic cliché, the imaginative abstract storytelling genre of electro is perfectly represented in this collection, in which 6SISS yet again emits his own densely packed work to emanate across the universe with a bold radiant energy.
Hello, how are you? We’re excited to have you on KEYI. Could you tell us what inspired the concept behind 6SISS – QUASAR and how it fits within the broader vision of Micron Audio?
Thanks for having me. I’m good.
The concept behind 6SISS – QUASAR likely stems from the overarching philosophy of Micron Audio, an innovative electronic music label run by DJ Stingray, which is deeply rooted in the fusion of futuristic sound design, sciences, and futurist narratives. Micron Audio is known for its commitment to exploring themes of technological innovation, humanity’s relationship with machines, and the sonic possibilities of electro music.
“QUASAR” itself draws inspiration from celestial phenomena—a quasar is an extremely luminous and energetic galactic core, symbolizing intensity, power, and mystery. This cosmic reference ties into Micron Audio’s broader vision of imagining futures through the lens of identity, technology, and space exploration. The quasar metaphor aligns perfectly with the label’s ethos of forward-thinking electronic music that is both intellectually stimulating and visceral.
The release carries a strong theme of scientific discovery and abstract storytelling. Could you share more about your approach to music and your creative process, particularly to our premiere of ‘Quasar IV’ and the broader spectrum of the full EP?
Certainly!
The approach to ‘Quasar IV‘ and the broader 6SISS – QUASAR EP is deeply rooted in creating a sonic narrative that evokes the awe and mystery of scientific discovery. The EP uses music as a vessel to transport listeners to abstract, otherworldly spaces, where they can feel the tension and wonder of exploring uncharted territories—both cosmic and internal.
The creative process involves a meticulous combination of futuristic sound design and storytelling. I’ll likely employ modular synthesis, intricate drum programming, and layered textures to create an immersive atmosphere. Each track on the EP, including ‘Quasar IV‘, serves as a chapter in this abstract story, where the listener is drawn into a cosmic journey symbolized by the quasar—an energetic phenomenon that represents discovery, intensity, and enlightenment. The track likely features a driving electro beat with detailed soundscapes that feel both mechanical and organic, mimicking the push and pull of scientific exploration. Its rhythmic complexity and layered melodies may reflect the dynamism of research and discovery, while atmospheric elements add a sense of mystery and vastness. This creates a balance between the cerebral and the visceral, which is central to my style.
You’ve mentioned that your music avoids retro-futuristic clichés, which can often dominate the electro genre. How did you ensure that your representation of a quasar remained fresh and unique approach?
Avoiding retro-futuristic clichés, particularly in a genre like electro that has a long history tied to sci-fi and futurism, requires a deliberate and innovative approach. For the 6SISS – QUASAR EP, the representation of a quasar as a theme remained fresh and unique by focusing on abstraction, cutting-edge sound design, and a forward-looking aesthetic
Many electro tracks lean on retro-futuristic aesthetics, drawing from the 1980s or early 2000s visions of the future. I’m sidestepping this by stripping down the sound to its core essence, avoiding overly nostalgic instrumentation like classic 808 basslines or overly robotic vocoders. This breaks away from the typical four-on-the-floor beats or robotic rigidity often found in electro.
What is the future for 6SISS?
“The future is purchased by the present”
