Daniel-Ryan Spaulding is a world-traveling comedian, seen in over 45 countries, he has established himself in the forefront of  the global comedy circuit. Described by Huffington Post as “brilliantly subversive” his comedy explores culture, identity, sexuality, stereotypes & personal confession.

He is now based in Berlin, where his youtube series “It’s Berlin!” has made him a local celebrity. He performs his solo shows to sold-out crowds in the city, and is currently aiming to develop “It’s Berlin!’ into a TV series. He made us lough during the pandemic, please meet up Daniel Ryan Spaulding.

Daniel-Ryan Spaulding

I thoroughly enjoyed your Mauerpark skit last year “It’s Berlin: Horny Quarantine” which consisted of a big gay, orgy rave. Tears were streaming down my face because you never tapped the brakes, instead you accelerated through the skit and painted quite a detailed picture. It was so great! Then, to be followed by Rihu Kai’s track “Wouldn’t That be Bad” featuring voice samples from this skit was the cherry on top. You said you feel you are the gay, white, Lizzo. I would love to see you team up with Lizzo! If it were possible, what would the song be about?

I am imagining a song called “Skinny Boy in Love With Me”, where we sing and rap about all the Skinny Boys who fall in love with us, but are too scared to try having sex with someone chubby. But it’s SO clear to everyone that “Skinny Boy in Love With Me” I do feel like the Gay White Lizzo. I wish the gay community embraced body positivity more. Social media seems to be accelerating body dismorphia for lots of men. The hard truth is that Having abdominal muscles doesn’t make you a better person. Maybe it makes you more desirable to shallow people, who care too much about intelligence or kindness – so if that’s your goal – I get it. But if you’re looking to live a life with more happiness & meaning, you’ll have to go a bit deeper.

When did you know that you wanted to be a comedian and who or what were your influences?

I always wanted to be an actor my whole life, but I didn’t enjoy the industry. I didn’t enjoy going for auditions, and uncertainty of whether I’d book jobs. So I decided to create work for myself, and started to do stand up comedy, and one man shows. I am not influenced by other comedians, but I get inspired by life and culture: travel, music, language, history, and just living my life!

What creative risks have you taken that paid off?

When the pandemic started, I had to switch over into doing content creation, because I couldn’t perform live comedy anymore. So I worked really hard, and did a video nearly every day for 3 months. It paid off big time! I know have over 60K followers on instagram, and really expanded my fan base all over the world.

What advice can you offer to other creatives who are struggling to make their art a viable profession?

I would say… have a clear vision of what you want to do, and WHY you want to do it… be open to adapting, and changing your plans…. and do your work with passion, enthusiasm, and a strong belief in yourself!

Your video series, “It’s Berlin” truly was comic relief for many of us during the pandemic. Your characters were so relatable– taking a poke at Berliner hipster culture. Being a Berliner club-goer myself, I found it not only hilariously tragic but also reflective, so thank you! I read that you want to turn this video series into a TV series on Netflix or Comedy Central. Any news yet and is there anyone we can contact or anything we can do to support your pitch?

Yes, my alter-ego DaNiel, in Berlin! the series is a perfect character for a comedy series. He’s selfish, he’s borderline, and completely outrageous. I have the pilot script ready to go! I just recently got my first writing job in television, so progress is being made! I am hoping that eventually the series will sell! It’s very hard to sell something in English, in Germany. But if anyone can do it: it’s Daniel-Ryan Spaulding!

If one of the local Berlin bars named a drink after you, “The Daniel-Ryan Spaulding,” would it be a beer, a shot, or a cocktail, and what special instructions and/or ingredients would it consist of? No boundaries!

Prosecco on Ice with some Grenadine, and a splash of cranberry juice. And when the waiter serves it to you, he says, “Bottoms up, you sexy bitch!”

You said you like Yugoslavian pop from the 80’s. Care to share any gems with us?

Dennis i Denis was my favourite band. It was a electro synth band. They only did 2 albums, but their music is so amazing, and so classic. They are still popular today, and reunited 25 years after their initial releases. I met the singer of the group: Marina Perazic in Croatia. She told me she was always so proud of being popular in the gay community. She said it’s always better to be a Gay Icon, rather than a Sex Symbol. Because Sex Symbols age, but a Gay Icon is timeless. Also love Neki to Vole Vruce, Tajci, Davoli, and of course: Josipa Lisac, another gay icon!

I especially love your “Hilda und Helga” skits. Do you have a “Hilda und Helga” story you would like to share or did you cover them all in your YouTube videos?

Well, yes, Hilda und Helga have led a very wild life. It would be such a dream to make it into a German TV show, with elderly German actresses playing them. I’ve developed a whole backstory for them. They are sort of like “Forrest Gump” always in the background of major historical events… but also “Thelma and Louise”One thing I haven’t explored in the videos is that as much as Hilda und Helga hate Auslanders, they also hate Stay-at-Home Mothers. Because in East Germany women continued to work when they had children, and staying at home with your child was seen as something lazy women would do. They actually had a slur for them: “Rabenmutter”, which means Raven Mother. Imagine Auslander Rabenmutter… they would go nuts!

You mentioned that your best gigs were in Beijing and Singapore. What made them special?

Well, I don’t really remember when I said that. But I did have some really awesome shows in Asia. I remember in November 2015, I did a show in Beijing. It was all for international people who were working there as English Teachers. Beijing is a hard, big city: so when people party – they party HARD! The lower level of the bar was a wine store, so you could buy really nice bottles of wine for 4 dollars, and bring them upstairs to the bar. So by the time I started, everyone was hammered! And they were so starved for English language entertainment – the whole night just became a huge party! Singapore and Malaysia are fun to perform at too, because they are very multicultural countries, and also have a huge expat scene, so you are performing for locals, and for people from all over the world.

Can you tell us about your upcoming projects?

I have two big writing projects right now that I need to focus on. I would like to take a break from comedy for a month or two. People are so frustrated right now. I feel like anything I do or say on social media pisses some people off – more than usual. People need to lighten up, and get vaccinated, and enjoy the summer. Even though bars are starting to open, until people are relaxed, and chill out the fuck out, I would rather not do live comedy. People need at least a month of summer, before they can get their sense of humor back. Maybe I will wait a bit to do a show in Berlin. I really want to travel. There are lots of other cities I’d like to visit: Brussels, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Tel Aviv.

What are your top three favorite films? Please share one of each: comedy, drama, action.

Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion, the Wizard of Oz, True Lies.

I appreciate the advice you gave in one of your “Ask me Anything” videos. You possess so much strength and are a beacon to others who struggle with social, cultural and personal pressures, sexual identity and acceptance. In your video you said: “Don’t change to think that you need to fit in or to get people to like you because the people that won’t like you are never going to like you. It’s better to be more yourself and to really put yourself out there because more than anything, people respect someone who is authentic and who isn’t afraid of ruffling feathers or other people’s judgements, because you really can’t control what other people think of you.”

We are living in a performance culture where everything is controlled and measured and graded all of the time. How do you practically create and maintain healthy boundaries with people and not let others’ negative energies influence you especially as your audience broadens?

It is hard to establish boundaries with fans, because some people feel like they know me, but they don’t seem to realize I don’t know them! You can’t expect someone to constantly engage with you, when they don’t know you. Sometimes people don’t respect my privacy in public. I think it’s fine to say hello, and ask for a selfie… but I’ve also had people stare or eavesdrop on conversations if I’m talking with a friend in the park. It comes with the price of being a public figure, so I shouldn’t complain…. I just wish I was more successful (money wise) to justify the lack of anonymity. If I was a millionaire, I wouldn’t mind as much, but I’m still just a regular guy getting his groceries, and getting beer at the Spaetkauf.

We sincerely thank you for your comedy and for helping so many of us through this tough time. We cannot wait to see you perform live again, maybe an open-air show this summer in Mariannenplatz, or at an actual venue, or even better, the big screen!

Thank you, let’s hope for the end of July or start of August!
